Waverly cop arrested on sex charges
Twenty-nine-year-old Jeremy Angelo of Chatham remains in custody at the Morgan County Jail. WLDS-WEAI News first reported his arrest yesterday morning at around 2:30 by the Illinois State Police.
The investigation started when a family member of the alleged victim contacted authorities, according to Morgan County Assistant State’s Atorney Robert Bonjean.
Bonjean says he was first in contact with state police detectives Friday afternoon and then throughout the night as Angelo was arrested. He says they gave him a brief overview and have since updated him on the progress of the investigation.
Bonjean believes the alleged incident took place in Waverly, but it’s unclear if Angelo was arrested on-duty. Waverly Police Chief Dave Searcy tells WLDS-WEAI that Angelo is no longer employed with the police department.
Bonjean says the victim is between the ages of 13 and 18. He believes the victim and Angelo knew each other. It’s not clear if it was a boy or girl.
A charge of criminal sexual assault is a Class 1 Felony and could result in four to fifteen year prison sentence, with the aggravated criminal sex abuse charge carrying a three-to-seven-year sentence.
