A Meredosia man has been arrested for allegedly beating a nine-month-old girl last month.

Morgan County Deputies arrested 27-year-old Darin Morrell this afternoon for Aggravated Battery of a Child. Deputies were called to a home in the Shady Acres Mobile Home Park on November 17th to assist Meredosia EMS. Morgan County Sheriff Randy Duvendack says the nine-month-old girl suffered an unexplained injury to the back of her head.

“To our knowledge it wasn’t long term abuse,” says Duvendack “It was an isolated traumatic injury to this child.”

The girl was taken to Passavant Area Hospital before being transferred for St. Louis Children’s Hospital. Duvendack says the infant was released from the hospital about a week ago and remains in the custody of the Department of Children and Family Services. He says it doesn’t appear Morrell used any weapons.

Duvendack says detectives at the sheriff’s office worked with DCFS, state police and doctors at the St. Louis Hospital.

“You obviously have a victim who can’t tell you what happened, so you’re just trying to do your best to work with specialists in this case,” says Duvendack. “The medical people in St. Louis are to my knowledge very outstanding individuals. They do a great job and so they were able to kind of tell us what happened and that this was an intentional act

Duvendack says Morrell was living at the victim’s home with the baby’s mother. He says Morrell is an acquaintance of the family. Duvendack says Morrell was the only person home when the injuries occurred.

He says it’s up to DCFS to determine when they’ll return the infant to the mother.

Morrell remains in custody and is being held without bond pending a court appearance.

Aggravated Battery of a Child is a class X felony and carries a sentence of 6 to 30 years in prison.
