A Springfield man is in custody after a car accident in the village last night.

Twenty-nine-year-old Justin Kavanagh was booked at the Morgan County Jail at noon for leaving the scene of a property damage accident, travelling too fast for conditions, and possession of cannabis after an incident in the 1400 block of Hardin.

Police Chief Richard Evans says Kavanagh was driving southbound on Hardin just before midnight when he lost control of his vehicle, ran off the west side of the road, crossed both lanes, ran off the east side of the road, overturned twice, and landed in the front yard of a house.

Evans says Kavanagh also knocked down a street sign.

A small fire started in the engine compartment, which Evans says was put out by police officers with fire extinguishers prior to the arrival of the South Jacksonville Fire Department. The driver was not at the scene at the time.

Evans says a search for the driver continued into the early morning hours. Kavanagh was arrested after a traffic stop in a new car about a block away from where the incident allegedly happened on Hardin.

Kavanagh remains in custody.
