A farming accident just outside of White Hall has left one man dead.

The Greene County Sheriff’s Department and county coroner are investigating what’s being classified as a farm-related accident that occurred on Tuesday.

According to Sheriff Rob McMillen, authorities were notified around 8 p.m. that 80-year-old Mark Steckel had not returned home at the time that his family expected him to return.

It was reported earlier in the day that Steckel left the family farm on a farm tractor with plans on working some farm ground near his home. McMillen says after Steckel failed to return home, his family contacted some friends to assist them in trying to locate him.

The individuals located the tractor Steckel was believed to have been operating a short distance from his home, and it had rolled down an embankment. Steckel was found with the tractor. Greene County Coroner Dean Bishop responded and pronounced him dead at around 9 p.m.

Steckel had to be extricated from the tractor by the White Hall Fire Department.

An autopsy is scheduled.
