Fire gutted an apartment in South Jacksonville this afternoon.

Firefighters were called to 1710 South Main Apartment 3 just after noon. Flames were shooting out of the front windows and door of the apartment when crews arrived. South Jacksonville assistant fire chief Richard Evans says it appears the blaze began in the furnace area near the middle of the apartment.

Twenty-seven-year-old Justin Spencer was the only person home at the time of the fire and escaped unharmed.

Adjacent apartments suffered smoke damage.

No other injuries were reported.
