A gas main leak shut down a section of Jacksonville’s busiest street for two hours this morning.

Morgan County ESDA Director Phil McCarty says IDOT construction workers struck the gain main at around 9:40 a.m. while putting in new stop lights in the 17-hundred block of West Morton.

McCarty says the release of natural gas prompted first responders to evacuate the immediate area for precautionary reasons.

“Ameren, Jacksonville Fire Department, Jacksonville Police Department, our office and IDOT are all here to mitigate the problem,” says McCarty.

The gas leak was fully repaired by Ameren Illinois at around 11:30 a.m. No injuries were reported.
