A birthday party unlike any other is taking place this weekend and next in Jacksonville.

Jacksonville School District 117 is celebrating 150 years with a “District Birthday Party” on Saturday from 1-4 p.m. at Jacksonville Middle School. Amy Albers of the Jacksonville Public Schools Foundation says the district was formed 150 years ago on September 9, and officials are recognizing the milestone by inviting the community to enjoy free cake and ice cream. She says the event will feature games and entertainment as well.

Albers says the celebration carries over into next weekend too.

“Next weekend is a big weekend for us. We start with the Homecoming parade at 4:00 p.m., then the JHS football game starts at 7:00 and we’ll have an alumni tent open at 6:00 Friday night. And then Saturday we kick off the day with a 9:00 a.m. 5K run/walk for education where we raise money for teacher grants. Then we have open houses at all of the high school buildings.”
