Hundreds of young women across the area are preparing for the Girls on the Run of Central Illinois “Peace, Love, Rock’n Run 5k” presented by Memorial Health System.
The non-competitive run/walk will be held on Saturday, November 9th at Lincoln Land Community College in Springfield, in celebration of the fall 2013 Girls on the Run program participants.
More than 460 third through eighth grade girls at 30 area schools are participating in the Girls on the Run and Girls on Track curriculum, which focuses on teaching self-respect and healthy lifestyle choices. The program season ends with the 5k event that celebrates their training.
In Jacksonville, Eisenhower, Washington, Franklin, North and South Elementary Schools are participating in the program, along with Our Saviour Grade School.
The event is open to the entire community. Family, friends and community supporters of all ages and abilities are encouraged to register to run or walk the course with the girls.
The event begins at 8:30 a.m. with a family-friendly festival that includes face and hair painting, fun activities, and photo opportunities. The race start time is 10:00 a.m. and medals will be distributed at the finish line to all finishers. Post-race activities will take place until noon on race day.
Early registration runs through Friday and is $25 for people 13 and older; it’s $15 for children 12 and younger. It’ll cost five dollars more to register between October 26th through November 8th, and ten dollars more to register the day of the event.
