A pair of elected officials are commenting on a recent report that claims they accepted illegal campaign donations.

According to the Edgar County Watchdogs, State Senator Sam McCann and State Representative C.D. Davidsmeyer received the campaign donations from Jersey County Community Hospital.

The State Board of Elections Contributions List states that McCann got $1,600 in campaign donations in 2014 and 2015.

McCann informed WLDS-WEAI News in a press release that his committee would “obviously never accept any contribution that it knew shouldn’t be received”. The statement added that “the committee received the two contributions with the presumption that the hospital had drawn the contributions on an account that was structured for such purposes”.

McCann plans to look into the issue, and if further review warrants, make a full refund to the hospital.

Davidsmeyer confirmed he received a pair of $600 donations from the public hospital district in 2014 and 2016. Davidsmeyer says he learned of the situation at the end of May and wrote a $1,200 check to the hospital weeks later.

According to Davidsmeyer, neither he nor the Jersey County Hospital CEO realized the donation was invalid.
