“Monster Millions” performances at the Playhouse

The Playhouse on the Jacksonville Square is hosting a monster show this weekend, but not the kind of show you might expect around Halloween.

Allen Stare wrote “Monster Millions,” which is showing Saturday night with a matinee performance on Sunday after initially opening last weekend. Stare says the premise of the production is about a major lottery winner — 10-million dollars or more in winnings — that loses everything.

“It takes place in 1994. A couple from Ohio, a fictional town and a fictional couple and lottery, but everything that happens to them is based on things that have actually happened to lottery winners in the last 30 years. They win that huge prize and then it’s just how you deal with that. One of the characters says ‘I’ve lived my whole life on a budget,’ and suddenly she’s sitting on 50-million dollars, and just what that does to you.”

Stare believes the audience will connect with the story. “It’s always that fantasy…to think, ‘Oh I can do it, I can handle it, I can make that work. I’d love to have that chance.’ But you just see that it’s so overwhelming and so impossible to deal with. That’s really what a lot of the show is about.”

The Saturday show is at 7:30 p.m. and the Sunday matinee is at 2:00 p.m. Tickets cost $10 each and can be purchased at the door, although reservations are recommended. More information is available on the Playhouse Facebook page.
