Morgan County joined a list of intergovernmental bodies on board with South Jacksonville’s Tax Increment Financing District.

Commissioners approved the village’s 12-year extension request this morning at the Morgan County Courthouse.

Signatures of support have been collected from Jacksonville School District 117, the Jacksonville Airport Authority and Road District 15.

Lincoln Land Community College still needs to sign off on the agreement.

South Jacksonville Code Enforcement Officer Wilbur German plans on meeting with school officials at the end of the month.

German told commissioners the focus of the TIF extension is to provide residential and commercial opportunities in South Jacksonville, but that doesn’t mean the rest of Morgan County won’t get a piece of the pie.

“Of the tax base, which is 100 percent, South Jacksonville is giving 40 percent of it back to the other five taxing bodies. We are only keeping 60 percent of the 100 percent. Forty-percent will come back at different percentages,” says German.

If Lincoln Land Community College approves the agreement, German expects to see projects like road construction, sewer repairs and park updates in Morgan County’s future.

In other action at the commissioners meeting, James Bailey was appointed to the North Scott Fire Protection District. Morgan County Clerk Jill Waggener reminded commissioners that early voting starts on September 29th.
