The Donation Coordinator for Gift of Hope spread the word about Organ and Tissue Donor Awareness Month this morning on WLDS’ “AM-Conversation.”

Mark Morris says Gift of Hope started celebrating April as Donate Life Month in 2003. Morris says the month promotes awareness on organ, tissue and eye donation, as well as the individuals who gave their lives to contribute to the network.

Morris explains some steps involved in the donation registry.

“You no longer have to sign your license like you did in the old days. Now you can go online to our website, www.giftofhope.org, or you can also go to lifegoeson.com or call 1-800-210-2106,” says Morris.

Morris says anyone who has re enrolled their donor registration after January 1st of 2006 is up-to-date.

“With the old registry it was more of an intent to donate, meaning even if you were in that registry before 2006 we still had to get permission from next of kin for donation to occur. After 2006 we went to a donors rights registry, meaning your wish will be carried out. We ask people to share that with next of kin,” says Morris.

Morris says registering to be an organ donor is an important commitment.

Morris estimates individuals who participate in this network can save or enhance the lives of 20 or more people.
