As Illinois residents prepare to hit the road for the holiday weekend, police are beefing up their patrols.
State police Captain Scott Compton says they’ll be keeping a close watch out for people getting behind the wheel after having a few drinks.
“I believe they think they won’t get caught or it won’t happen to them,” says Compton.
“Some unfortunately have done it before so they can drive after, but certainly that is not the case.”
The end of summer push will focus on catching drunk drivers, people who are speeding and those who aren’t strapped in.
Drivers should also count on seeing an increased amount of roadside safety checks.
More than 560 people have been killed on Illinois roadways this year.
