Raises for one commissioner, circuit clerk, coroner

Morgan County Commissioners approved a resolution setting salaries for one commissioner, the circuit clerk and coroner this morning.

Chairman Bill Meier says nearly six years ago, commissioners were informed by an auditor that salaries could not be set for sitting county officials every two years; rather, commissioners had to wait for an open seat to set the salary.  Commissioners are elected every six years.

Meier says he will get a 1.8 percent raise annually for six years, while the circuit clerk and coroner will see a 1.5 percent raise annually for 1.5 percent for four years.

“Basically, after 2019, the salaries for Commissioner 1 [Meier] will be frozen for three years, and in 2017, the circuit clerk’s salary will be frozen for three years, and also the coroner would be frozen for three years,” explains Meier. “Our employees are on CPI now, I think they got around a 1.8 or 1.9 percent raise. So, I think it shows the employees that we’re behind them, and we just want to make sure we’re doing the right thing,” he continues.

Also at this morning’s meeting, commissioners approved an intergovernmental agreement with Calhoun and Greene Counties to form a new joint dispatch unit for emergency services.

Although this is a new agreement, Morgan County ESDA coordinator Phil McCarty says there are no major changes to the agreement that was previously announced.

“We had to change some wording around, some organizational stuff, just to make it more fluid for the future,” say McCarty.

Commissioners also appointed Lynn Colburn to the West central Mass Transit District board, as well as an engineering agreement for a bridge replacement for a structure on Township Road 83 over Lick Creek east of Concord. That’s in Road District 3. The agreement with Hutchison Engineering is for $42,500.
