Plenty of local children will hit the streets tonight for Halloween trick-or-treating, and the local police are reminding residents of a few rules when it comes to tonight’s activities.
The Jacksonville and South Jacksonville Police Departments are reminding residents that trick-or-treating is only allowed before 9 p.m. tonight and tomorrow. Also, trick-or-treating is restricted to children ages 12 and under according to city and Village ordinances, and that children trick-or-treating may not go more than five blocks from their home.
Local authorities recommend that children travel in groups and be accompanied by a parent or responsible adult. Trick-or-treaters should be instructed to travel only in familiar areas, along established routes, and to stop only at houses or apartment buildings that are well-lit. Police also ask that children wear brightly-colored costumes outfitted with reflective material, and to wear masks that do not restrict the child’s vision. It’s suggested that children carry a flashlight or battery-operated lantern in order to be seen, and that the sack or container should be no larger than the child can safely handle.
As for local residents, those wishing to pass out treats are asked to turn on exterior lights such as a porch light, and those who do not wish to participate are asked to leave such lighting off. Area drivers should pay close attention to speed limits and be alert to children who may be difficult to see at night.
Local police encourage parents to not allow their children to eat any treats before returning home. Parents should closely inspect all treats prior to consumption, checking the packaging to make sure that it hasn’t been punctured, cut or torn. Any candy that has damaged wrappers should be discarded.
