The Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office says 50-year-old Creighton Colson of Glenarm was picked up around midnight Saturday night in Morgan County for animal cruelty and neglect.

Lisa Jackson of the Protecting Animal Welfare Society in Jacksonville says she was contacted by an acquaintance of Colson’s who reported the abuse, and the shelter took the emaciated dog in early last week.

Jackson talked to our reporting partners at WICS ABC Newschannel 20 about the importance of understanding the responsibility of owning a pet.

“It’s a lifetime commitment. You need to really take that into consideration before you adopt. Are you ready to commit to the lifetime of this animal?”

The dog, named Brody, has fortunately gained six pounds in the last four days, and a Jacksonville couple who volunteer at PAWS have agreed to adopt him.

Colson has been released on bond.
