Its prom season in West Central Illinois, but teens looking to hop in the tanning bed for a quick tan are out of luck.

At the beginning of the year, teenagers in Illinois were officially banned from using tanning beds. Illinois is one of only six states with a teen tanning bed ban in place. If a salon violates the law they can be fined $250. Teens do have another option though if they want to look tan for prom season, and that’s spray tanning.

Mr. John’s School of Cosmetology pregrad Brianna Nolting says since teen tanning in Illinois was banned, spray tan sales have gone up. She just received her first spray tan and says it’s much better for your skin and a simple process.

“Spray tans are a lot better for you and it doesn’t harm your body,” says Nolting.

“There are also no UV lights. I’ve had no problems with spray tans. It’s just like putting makeup on your body and face.”

According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, people who use a tanning bed before age 35 increase their risk for melanoma by 75 percent.
