One person is dead and another in critical condition after a two-vehicle accident near Waverly last night.
The wreck happened at around 11:45 p.m. at the intersection of Route 111 and the Nortonville blacktop, about three miles south of town.
Waverly Fire Chief Glen Brown says two men were ejected from a pickup truck after it blew a stop sign headed east on Nortonville Road. The pickup apparently collided with a tow truck that was headed southbound on Route 111.
Brown says the tow truck driver tried to avoid the pickup, but he hit the front fender of the vehicle before driving into a bean field. The force of the collision sent the ejected occupants more than 20 feet from the crash scene, according to Brown.
One of the men in the pickup was pronounced dead at the scene. The other was airlifted to a Springfield hospital. Brown says he’s in serious condition.
The tow truck driver complained of shoulder and back pain and was treated at the scene.
The names of the man killed and the injured individual have not been released. Illinois State Police is handling the investigation.
