Records fell Friday at the 39th annual West Central Illinois Boys All Star Classic, sponsored by Country Financial.
The two teams combined to score 154 points. That’s five points more than the two previous best totals of 249 points, set first in 1989, and again in 1992.
The South squad scored 46 in the first quarter, and had 77 points at half. The North trailed by 26 at half, but scored 44 in the third to pull within 10 at the end of three. At one point, the North squad shrunk the lead to 3.
Three’s rained down all night. A total of 49 was made. Twenty nine were knocked down by the North squad, nine more than the record for a team set by the North in 1992. The South had 20 to match the old mark. And, Max Stinebaker of Griggsville-Perry and Max Muller of Porta/AC, both of the North, both cashed in 8 three’s to eclipse the previous record of 7 set in 1992 by Chris Barber of Triopia. James White of JHS led the South with 6 three pointers.
Stinebaker, who had five three pointers in the third quarter alone, ended up leading both squads in scoring with 26. Muller had 24. Brandon McCombs of JHS led the South with 21 points, with a couple of dunks.
The winner of the three point shooting competition prior to the game was Isaac Collins of Pleasant Plains, who torched the nets for 13.
Prior to the game, Muller announced he plans on playing basketball next year at Illinois Wesleyan.
