Virginia School District officials have discovered asbestos in the gym floor that was damaged during severe weather earlier this month.
The Springfield Journal-Register reports asbestos was found in the vapor seal between the subfloor and floor as an examination was taking place.
On September 5th, 80-mile-per-hour winds tore off part of the junior-senior high school’s roof, allowing rain to damage the contents inside. Officials determined the gym floor would need to be replaced last week.
Virginia Superintendent Brent O’Daniell told the newspaper that the gym has been locked and there is no danger to students or air quality issue.
The asbestos removal is expected to add two to four weeks of repair time to the previously-estimated 8-to-10 weeks it was thought to need to get the floor fixed.
