The Beardstown man facing murder charges in the death of an eight-month-old child has pleaded guilty to first degree murder.

Our news partners at WICS ABC Newschannel 20 say 28-year-old Jose Nieto-Roman made the plea in Cass County court on Friday.

He was charged last November with two counts of murder and one count of aggravated battery.

Nieto-Roman was the live-in boyfriend of the woman who called for medical assistance on behalf of her child at 617 Wall Street. The baby was taken to Culbertson Hospital in Rushville, where the child was later pronounced dead.

Police say preliminary autopsy results revealed blunt force trauma.

State police say Nieto-Roman returned to the scene as the investigation was taking place, and he apparently removed knives and began injuring himself before being taken into custody. He had been at a local hospital recovering.

A sentencing date has been set for August 11th. Neito-Roman will serve up to 50 years in prison.
