While many in our area are focused on the Illinois River flooding, folks in northern Cass County are watching the Sangamon River.

That waterway is just today crossing the threshold from major flood stage to moderate flooding. The village levee breached over the weekend, and the community has been sandbagging since.

Chandlerville Village President Tim Richard spoke with our reporting partners at WICS ABC Newschannel 20.

“On English Avenue, the water’s coming in down there. There’s going to be about a half-a-dozen homes affected down there, definitely in basements, on first floors. That’s just something we can’t prevent at this time,” says Richard. “We’re going to look into that, see if we can’t get them some assistance there.”

The Red Cross is also providing food and shelter for Chandlerville residents.
