Charges are pending in connection to the death of a 10-month old child in Beardstown last Friday.

According to a press release from the Illinois State Police, the Cass County State’s Attorney’s Office is preparing preliminary charges of child endangerment against 28-year-old Jose Nieto-Roman of Beardstown.

Nieto-Roman is currently at a local hospital in serious condition from wounds he apparently inflicted upon himself on Friday.

Beardstown police officers responded to a request for medical assistance at 617 Wall Street that morning. Nieto-Roman was the live-in boyfriend of the woman who called for help on behalf of her child.

The baby was pronounced dead at a hospital. Police now say preliminary autopsy results revealed blunt force trauma, although additional tests are still pending.

State police say Nieto-Roman returned to the scene as the investigation was taking place on Friday, and he apparently removed knives and began injuring himself before being taken into custody. State police say he’s not medically able to be detained or interviewed at this time.

Additional charges could come from the state’s attorney’s office, according to state police.

The investigation continues by Beardstown Police, the Cass County State’s Attorney’s Office, and state police.

Police are still not calling this a murder, but a death investigation.
