A California man has been sentenced to eight years in the Illinois Department of Corrections after a 2014 arrest for cannabis trafficking in Morgan County.

Forty-five-year-old William Vaughn of North Highlands, a Sacramento suburb, received that sentence this morning in Morgan County Court after reaching a plea deal. He also pleaded guilty to aggravated fleeing or attempting to elude a peace officer. A charge of cannabis possession was dropped.

Vaughn was arrested last November after allegedly tossing a duffel bag containing about twelve pounds of pot out of a car during a high-speed police chase on Interstate 72 that lasted over 15 miles.

Vaughn must also serve three years of mandatory supervised release. He was fined $5,350.

Vaughn was represented by attorney Ron Kesinger.
