We’re getting new information about an oil spill in Jacksonville that happened earlier this month.

According to Morgan County Emergency Services Director Phil McCarty, the source of the spill in a field near Elm City Center on Walnut Street is from the Illinois Road Contractors paving company.

McCarty tells WLDS-WEAI News that IRC has taken responsibility for the spill and is mitigating the situation. Equipment operators have been on scene this week cleaning up.

Jacksonville firefighters responded to the spill, which happened on January 7th, to keep the oil out of drainage systems.

It’s still not clear what caused the spill or how much material was spilled. Messages have been left with the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency and Illinois Road Contractors.
