A popular Meredosia restaurant was destroyed by fire overnight.

Meredosia Fire Chief Scott Werries says a passerby saw smoke coming from Main Street Café at 317 Main Street just before 2:30.

Werries says smoke was coming from the front and back of the restaurant, and flames were shooting through the attic when firefighters arrived. He says the building appears to be a total loss.

Werries says Village Hall, located immediately west of the restaurant, suffered moderate smoke damage. Two other buildings and two apartments suffered minor smoke damage.

Werries says the blaze appears to have started in a utility room in the back of the business where an electrical box, water heater and furnace are located. He says it’s too early to determine how the fire started.

The State Fire Marshal will investigate, but Werries says the blaze is not considered suspicious.

No injuries were reported and Werries says nobody was inside the restaurant when the fire broke out.

The restaurant is owned by Lawrence and Melissa Johnson.

The Arenzville Fire Department assisted in battling the blaze. Crews were on scene for about four hours.

Meredosia firefighters are still on scene.
