Fieldwork activities continued for West Central Illinois farmers last week with few interruptions.

USDA crop statistician Mark Schleusener says farmers were able to wrap up harvest in most locations, plant winter wheat, continue with fall tillage and apply fertilizer across the state.

Schleusener provides the latest topsoil and subsoil ratings.

“Topsoil moisture was rated five percent very short, 21 short, 69 percent adequate and five percent surplus,” says Schleusener.

“Subsoil moisture was nearly the same at six percent very short, 29 percent short, 61 percent adequate and four percent surplus.”

The state average rainfall was nearly half an inch, around 0.14 inches below average for the week. Temperatures were nearly eight degrees above normal for the week, averaging 53.3 degrees.
