A local donation drive is making sure Jacksonville students stay warm during the winter months.
The Jacksonville Area Convention & Visitors Bureau has teamed up with The Hampton Inn for the third annual Hat, Gloves and Scarves Drive.
Executive Director Brittney Henry says the drive started as a spin-off on the Lion’s Club Coat Drive and has grown each year.
“We partnered with The Hampton Inn because of their 24 hour drop off location. We decided to do the Hats, Gloves and Scarves Drive because many students at Turner Jr. High and 8 Points Charter walk to school. We wanted to make sure their hands, ears and necks are warm.”
Henry says nearly every student from 8 Points Charter received a hat, glove and scarf set during the first year of the drive. More than 45 sets were handed out to Turner Jr. High students.
Henry says donation numbers increased last year and she hopes that trend continues in 2015.
“It is so great to see everyone come together for this cause, but it isn’t just our community. As people are staying at the hotels, they are bringing in supplies as well. We are getting travelers willing donate, which I think is just great.”
The drive will run through November 23rd and donations will be handed out the next day.
Anyone donating will have a chance to win daily prizes or the grand prize of a pizza and pool party at The Hampton Inn.
