Hillview avoids another serious levee breach

The emergency services coordinator in Greene County says the town of Hillview is lucky that a levee breached by floodwaters didn’t seriously flood the town for the second time this year.

The levee on Hurricane Creek broke yesterday in the same spot it did in July. The summer breach left nearly four-fifths of the Greene County town with standing water. This time, no evacuations were necessary, although some homes were affected by water yesterday.

Greene County ESDA director Cale Hoesman says after the summer flood, there was a disagreement on whether the levee should be prepared, and if so, to what extent, between the levee district and the village.

Five to ten inches of rain have fallen in Greene County since late last week, according to the National Weather Service.      Although the water in Hillview has receded, Hoesman says the county is still plenty soggy.

Hoesman says there are still some county roads closed because of water, but that the Hillview-Eldred blacktop has re-opened.
