The Illinois River crested at 28 feet on Tuesday. Officials continue to monitor the levees 24 hours a day while they hold.

One of the main issues officials will be watching for is areas of water that may seep through the levees.

Morgan County Emergency Services Director Phil McCarty tells our reporting partners at WICS ABC Newschannel 20 that there are plans he would like to get started to protect the area from flooding in the future.

“There’s a couple places where we want to build some roads up so maybe they won’t flood and we need to start a project and maybe an ongoing project for years, but we need to build up the north levee in Meredosia in the village,” says McCarty.

Officials say they are hoping for the river to drop below 27 feet by Friday.
