Jacksonville budget reading shelved

A discussion on the 2016 Appropriations Budget was postponed during Monday night’s City Council meeting.

Aldermen were scheduled to discuss the matter during a workshop session, followed by the first reading of the budget, but Finance Committee Chairman Don Cook removed the item from the agenda because there was no recommendation from the committee.

Cook talks about whether this constitutes a speed bump in the budget process.

“Well, right now, we just have some questions from some of the aldermen, and as a matter of procedure, we do not have a recommendation from the Finance Committee to approve or not approve the Appropriations Budget as presented,” he says.

A Finance Committee meeting to go over the budget has been scheduled for Friday morning. For aldermen on the committee or not, Cook says this is a “speak now or forever hold your peace” situation.

“That’s basically it. Hopefully, by the next meeting, we will have an Appropriations Budget on [the agenda] for first reading,” Cook say s.

Friday’s meeting is at 9 a.m.
