A Jacksonville Police officer received medical treatment at Passavant Area Hospital this afternoon while responding to a fire in the city.

Jacksonville Fire Captain Brian Nyberg confirmed the fire at 504 North Fayette started at around 3:15 a.m.

Nyberg says fire crews arrived at the two-story house to find the fire contained to an upstairs bedroom. The residents of the house vacated the premises immediately upon seeing the fire. Several cats were saved from the blaze.

Nyberg estimates the property suffered around $32,000 in fire and smoke damage. He believes the fire started from electrical problems.

The officer, who remains unknown, was released from Passavant after being treated for smoke inhalation.

The house was being rented by Russell Harris. Red Cross is providing the Harris family with housing.
