A Jacksonville man is behind bars after allegedly attacking someone with a hammer Monday night.

Thirty-two-year-old Michael Burrus of the 1-thousand block of West Morton was arrested at his residence at around 6:15 a.m. this morning in reference to the incident.

Jacksonville Police Department Lieutenant Adam Mefford says the attack occurred at a small gathering.

“The victim was known to the offender. There was some sort of party going on and at some point a disagreement ensued between the victim and assailant.  During the course of the fight the victim was hit with a hammer several times in the back area and a few times in the head area,” says Mefford.

The nature of the disagreement is not known at this point and is still under investigation.

Burrus, who is currently on parole for an unrelated incident, was booked for aggravated battery and remains in custody at the Morgan County Jail.

The victim’s name is not being released at this time, but Mefford confirmed he was treated and released from Passavant Area Hospital.
