A Jacksonville man has been arrested in connection to an incident in April of this year where he allegedly shot himself in the leg accidentally.

Nineteen-year-old Edward Hyman of the 1100 block of North Clay was arrested in the 1200 block of South Main at around 5:15 p.m. by Jacksonville Police last night for filing a false police report and no valid FOID card.

Officers responded to a shots fired call on April 7th. Hyman was taken to Passavant Area Hospital, and police made the determination the same day that the shooting appeared to be accidentally self-inflicted with a handgun, caliber unknown.

The incident forced students and staff at the District 117 Early Years program to be put in a soft lockdown.

Hyman apparently claimed someone else shot him in the leg, and accordingly was not taken into custody, and JPD Lieutenant Sean Walker said this morning he “disappeared” afterwards. He said police had been looking for Hyman for a while.

Hyman remains in custody.
