Federal law requires men in the United States between the ages of 18 and 25 to register with Selective Service in the event there’s a wartime draft. Each state has its own committee, and Jim Duncan tells WLDS-WEAI News he’s now part of the Illinois committee.

Duncan, who is the chairman of the Jacksonville Plans Commission and commander of the local AMVETS post, says he’ll head up the region of the Illinois committee that covers Morgan County and part of Sangamon County.

Duncan says his main job will be to handle the appeal process for someone who wants to get out of conscription, should a draft be instated.

There hasn’t been a draft since the early 1970s, after the United States moved to an all-volunteer military.
