Jax businesses getting a bigger presence on Google Maps

A Springfield organization is partnering with the Jacksonville Area Chamber of Commerce and Google to put local businesses on the map…literally.

John Bury, the Chapter Chair for SCORE, says the focus of the event today is to help businesses “update and claim” their Google page.

“This is an initiative by Google to make their search engines as relevant as possible.  If someone searches for a business they want to be as accurate as possible. If someone searches for restaurants, the search engine is going to show restaurants in the area. If your business isn’t listed on that map, it doesn’t exist in the mind of the person searching for it.”

Bury says business owners will learn to gain control of what is being displayed about their business on Google maps.

“Google has created many of the businesses from public information. As a business owner you can claim your page and control was is listed on that page.”

Bury says staff will work one-on-one with business owners from 5-6 p.m. at the Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce Office.
