The Jacksonville Police Department is taking back unwanted prescription drugs this weekend.

In an effort to prevent pill abuse and theft, the JPD and Drug Enforcement Administration is allowing the community to drop off potentially dangerous, expired and unused prescription drugs at the Jacksonville Police Department.

According to a press release, Americans turned in 350 tons of prescription drugs last September. In 10 previous Take Back events, the DEA and its partners have taken in more than 5.5 million pounds of pills.

The Take Back event looks to cut down the high rate of prescription drug use and accidental poisonings. Flushing pills down the toilet or throwing them in the trash has been found to be a safety and public health hazard.
