A Beardstown man is in custody facing charges of endangering the life or health of a child.

Twenty-eight-year-old Jose Nieto-Roman remains in custody in the Morgan County Jail, where he was booked at around 3:45 p.m. on Sunday. Nieto-Roman is facing that charge in connection to the death of a 10-month old child in Beardstown in October.

Nieto-Roman was the live-in boyfriend of the woman who called for medical assistance on behalf of her child at 617 Wall Street. The baby was taken to Culbertson Hospital in Rushville, where the child was pronounced dead.

Police say preliminary autopsy results revealed blunt force trauma.

State police say Nieto-Roman returned to the scene as the investigation was taking place, and he apparently removed knives and began injuring himself before being taken into custody. He had been at a local hospital recovering.

Additional charges could come from the state’s attorney’s office, according to state police.

Police are still not calling this a murder, but a death investigation.
