Jacksonville’s state senator was a key vote in yesterday’s vote on a union arbitration bill.
The Illinois Senate overrode a veto by Governor Bruce Rauner last month on a bill that would allow contract talks between the state and the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees to be decided by an arbitrator.
Senator Sam McCann was the only Republican vote to support the override, which helped get the vote to 38-15. That was just two votes above the minimum.
McCann told the Springfield Journal-Register that he represents more state employees than any other member of the general assembly. A statement from Governor Rauner’s office criticized McCann and other senators who voted to override the veto, saying they chose special interests over the taxpayers.
The override must still be approved by the House by a three-fifths margin.
