First the first time in over 40 years, traffic on both lanes of North Main Street will be open to the public.
Jacksonville Main Street’s Judy Tighe made the announcement earlier this week that engineers and construction workers will be moving the gates.
The milestone is being commemorated with free window clings for the first 500 vehicles to drive onto or off from the square on North Main. These decals will available from Jacksonville Main Street volunteers, the Jacksonville Area Convention & Visitors Bureau, World Travel and Girls in White Satin Bridal & Formal Wear.
While the work on the Downtown area is not finished, and brief interruptions to traffic flow may occur as construction proceeds, the public is encouraged to keep patronizing downtown businesses.
Jacksonville Main Street also reminds downtown visitors to use extra caution when driving or walking around downtown throughout construction.
