Oil spill being investigated in Jacksonville

The Jacksonville Fire Department responded Thursday to a field with some oil residue in it next to Elm City Center on Walnut. Lieutenant Matt Leischner says the fire department was called out by the Morgan County Emergency Services Department to respond.

Leischner says the fire department dug some trenches in low-lying areas and staked down some booms to further contain the residue. He says the goal was to keep the oil out of drainage systems.

According to the Jacksonville Journal-Courier, the Emergency Services department and Illinois Environmental Protection Agency are investigating what caused the spill, which was apparently noticed by Elm City Center employees several days ago on the east side of their property.

Officials say Elm City Center was not the source of the oil.
