One person has died as a result of a car accident on Route 267 in Greene County over the weekend.

According to the Illinois State Police, it happened about a half-mile south of Roth Road in Rockbridge Township Saturday night shortly before 8:45 p-m. Police say 44-year-old Darren Winn of Rockbridge was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. Preliminary investigation shows Winn was driving northbound on the highway while two vehicles were travelling the opposite way.

Police say Winn drove into the oncoming lane, forcing the driver of one of the other cars, 58-year-old James Klug of Brighton, to drive off into a ditch as an evasive maneuver.

According to reports, Winn then struck the side of Klug’s truck, and then hit the third vehicle, driven by 57-year-old Janice Klug, also of Brighton, head-on, before spinning out of control.

Police say Winn wasn’t wearing a seat belt, and was ejected from the vehicle. Alcohol was reportedly a factor in the crash.

Neither James nor Janice Klug suffered injuries.
