Passavant Area Hospital has received a designation by the state for its preparedness in treating stroke victims.

The Illinois Department of Public Health’s declaration of Passavant as an Emergent Stroke Ready Hospital remains valid for a twelve-month period, according to state law. Emergent hospitals must provide rapid access to an acute stroke team, administer thrombolytic therapy, conduct brain image tests and blood coagulation studies at all times, among other guidelines.

Passavant Emergency Department Nurse Manager Jerrod Wilson said in a hospital press release patients are provided rapid medical access within a 60-minute treatment time, which he says is critical for stroke patients and can minimize long-term damage from stroke.
