Phone equipment testing at JACIL today

If you’re hard of hearing and want to test out a new piece of equipment designed to make phone calls a little easier, you’re in luck.

The Illinois Telecommunications Access Corporation is having a testing event in Jacksonville on Wednesday to demonstrate several devices.

The non-profit, Springfield-based ITAC is distributing the free amplified phone devices to those who qualify. On-site hearing tests will be available at the Jacksonville Area Center for Independent Living.

“The idea is that someone who does have difficulty hearing on the phone can come in, test the devices that are available,” says JACIL executive director Becky McGinnis.

“New this year is a cell phone option. As I recall, it is not an actual cell phone, it’ s an amplifier that goes with a cell phone. People decide what is best for them, and fill out the paperwork to determine if they are eligible.”

McGinnis says someone will be available on-site to do certification. She says you do need to bring a picture ID and a phone bill with you.

The event is from 9 a.m. to noon today.
