A portion of Illinois Route 267 will soon be renamed after a fallen South Jacksonville police officer.

Thanks to House Joint Resolution 138, which passed the Senate 57-0 on Tuesday, the stretch of road from I-72 to Nortonville Road will be renamed Officer Scott Fitzgerald Memorial Highway.

The legislation passed in the House 114-0 on May 19th.

Representative C.D. Davidsmeyer and Senator Sam McCann were sponsors of the legislation. House Joint Resolution 138 does not need Governor Bruce Rauner’s signature to go into effect.

Fitzgerald died in the line of duty in March while responding to a medical call near Nortonville Road. He had previously served with the Scott County Sheriff’s Department, and Winchester and Bluffs Police Departments. Fitzgerald also served as a volunteer firefighter with the Murrayville Fire District and had recently been selected as a member of the Special Response Team in Morgan County.
