A Carrollton man will serve a five-year prison sentence in connection to a deadly accident in 2013.
The sentence was handed down to 38-year-old Garry Hillis on Monday in Greene County Court by Judge James Day.
Hillis was found guilty on July 22nd after a three-day jury trial.
He was arrested in January 2014 after police determined he was the driver of the vehicle involved in a May 2013 accident that killed 32-year-old Brandy Gilbert of Carrolton. The accident happened on Route 108 west of Carrollton.
The Greene Prairie Press reports Hillis’ attorneys, Ben Allen and Gray McGhee, asked for a motion for a new trial, which was denied. The paper adds that an appeal to the Illinois Appellate Court was filed on behalf of Hillis, in addition to a motion to stay the IDOC sentence, pending the appeal.
Hillis was also fined $2,000.
We reached out to Greene County State’s Attorney Caleb Briscoe for comment this morning, but a message left was not returned.
