Resume help, career fair coming up in Jax this week

The career services departments of MacMurray College and Illinois College are partnering for a couple of events this upcoming week.

Professionals from the Central Illinois Chapter of the Society of Human Resources will be available at the two schools to offer resume tips to students and members of the community from 5 to 6:30 p.m. on Monday.

Anne Godman is MacMurray’s director of the Career Service Center.

“Anyone can call and make an appointment to come and have their resume reviewed, talk about strategies to execute a great job conversation at a career fair, or just ask other questions about a job search,” says Godman.

“We do work with our students, as does IC, to ensure that they’re prepared and aware of what they need to do to be competitive in a very tight job market. Very soon there will be five generations in the workplace, and we want our students to know that there are strategies and steps they can take to execute a great job search,” she adds.

Godman notes the way resumes should be prepared has changed.

“No longer do you have an objective at the top of the resume. Research shows that HR takes between six and twelve seconds to review a resume and decide which pile it goes into, and so you have to be very strategic,” she says.

To make an appointment for Monday’s resume event, call Godman at 479-7141 or Illinois College’s Susie Drake at 245-3041.

The Jacksonville Community Fair is right around the corner on Wednesday at Bill Wall Gym. Students are invited to attend from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., while the general public can come in from 1 to 2:00.
