It turns out the Village of South Jacksonville is responsible for the payment and cleanup of a retaining wall that collapsed in the village back in January.

South Jacksonville Water Superintendent John Green explains how the issue in the 1600 block of South Main is being handled.

“It depends on where the wall is standing. Each property could be different, because on the south end it falls to the village to maintain it. Further down the road, where it veers off to private property, then it is the responsibility of the home owner.”

Green says those guidelines were set by the state more than 20 years ago when South Main was widened and the wall was first constructed.

Green says village residents should still be cautions when traveling along the damaged wall.

“If you look at it, the rest of it is leaning quite a bit. We barricaded the rest of it off because we don’t want it coming down on someone as they are walking by.”

Green says the village is still waiting on several bids to come in for the construction project and hopes to have the wall fixed as soon as possible.
