A Springfield ministry catering to homeless pregnant women is extending its arms to West Central Illinois during a special event this weekend.
Beerlahai Roi Women’s Ministries will be holding its annual Hike For Babies fundraiser on Saturday at Lincoln Park in Springfield.
Executive Director Lindy Laun says the non-profit organization has been providing food, clothing and shelter to pregnant women and their babies during times of crisis for the past 17 years,.
“We have residents who come from the surrounding Springfield area and even out of state. This resident home is the only resident home for unwed mothers in Central Illinois. We want to promote that and get people excited about the Hike For Babies on October 3rd. It is our only fundraiser of the year that gets all these surrounding Springfield areas into our community.”
Laun says the Springfield house accommodates up to 25 individuals a year.
“We are able to house up to four women at a time. Some stay longer than others, but they are allowed to stay with us around eight months after the birth of their child. That gives them time…us.”
Laun says Beerlahai Roi has received a number of generous donations this year. She hopes that the Hike For Babies fundraiser can bring in an extra $25,000.
“We will gather at the park at 9 a.m. and hike around the park for about a mile. People will be bringing their pledges that they have supported. We will have a program where residents can share about the ministry. We are so blessed to have been able to serve over 200 women.”
With the additional help of area churches, Laun expects to have well over 100 participants enter the event. To download a pledge sheet go online to www.beerlahairoi.com.
