Two individuals accused of attacking a Jacksonville man in Community Park pleaded “not guilty” to aggravated battery charges yesterday morning.

Michael Smith and Mondre White, both city residents, were arrested on March 14th. Police said the incident happened during the afternoon hours of March 11th. Jacksonville Police Detective Brad Rogers testified in Morgan County Court that the victim was playing basketball in Community Park when two armed men exited a passing-by vehicle and attacked the victim.

Witness statements indicated Smith stabbed the man in the back with a knife, while White attacked him with a baseball bat. Police were reportedly told the incident stemmed from an ongoing feud between two groups.

It was determined by Judge Chris Reif that probable cause existed to proceed with the case. White and Smith pleaded not guilty to the charges and requested jury trials. They are next scheduled to appear in court on May 6th.
